INCOME MERSIN answer

The spelling of my last name in my passport and the TAPU (Tapu) is inconsistent due to transliteration during the sale of my apartment. Is there a problem?

What should I do to avoid problems when purchasing an apartment in Turkey if my last name is spelled differently in my new passport due to a different transliteration than in the TAPU (the spelling of one letter, Y, is changed to I)?

A discrepancy in the spelling of a first or last name (even a single letter) between the TAPU and the foreign passport poses a problem for the sale of an apartment. The Cadastral Chamber will not process the transaction if there are discrepancies in the documents.

What to do?

  • Provide a certificate of name change. If the change occurred due to a transliteration change, the passport must be reissued with the first and last name spelled as in the TAPU.
  • If you are in Turkey, contact the consulate in any city to obtain a certificate (with an apostille) stating that the changed name in your passport exactly matches the name as indicated in the TAPU.
  • Advice: When receiving a TAPU, always maintain the exact transliteration in your passport by writing a statement on maintaining the accuracy of your first and last name, along with a copy of your old passport.
