Kızkalesi Castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in southern Turkey and a landmark of the Mersin region. The castle is located directly in the sea, 200 meters from the shore, opposite the resort village of Kızkalesi in the Erdemli district.

The Legend of the Princess
A beautiful legend is associated with the fortress's name. According to the story, the ruler was told that his daughter would die from a snake bite. To save her, he built a fortress in the middle of the sea. But the snake nevertheless entered in a basket of fruit—and the prophecy came true.
That is why the place was named Kızkalesi – “Maiden’s Fortress”.
